Travelpulse.com reported this week that the crews of six Princess and six Holland America Line ships counted, rolled and donated excess onboard pennies to Scout troops in Ketchikan, Alaska. When the project was over, Troops 4 and 2004 received $5,000.
Crew members collected coins from different departments like guest services, the casino and the finance department aboard ships cruising around Alaska this summer. Crew members prepared nearly 1,000 pounds of pennies. Other generous donations pushed the total gift to a nice, round number.

Pennsylvania Scout recognized by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
Scout Gavin Wanner refurbished an outdated pier at Blue Marsh Lake in southeastern Pennsylvania and received a Volunteer Excellence Coin along with recognition at the pier’s grand reopening ceremony. In a news release, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said the Eagle Scout project increased structural resilience and improved accessibility with an Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant walkway.

Virginia Scout gives back to cancer center that treated his mom
Joshua Foster, a Life Scout from Troop 2 in Winchester, Virginia, delivered care packages to cancer patients at the University of Virginia Cancer Center where his mom, Keiko Foster, was a stem cell treatment patient. Care packages included pens, crossword puzzles, blankets, tissues and handwritten cards. Foster and his team of volunteers also collected donations for the center totaling $1,117.21.
