On Scouting readers might remember Clovis Hung from a 2023 story about the remarkable 12-year-old who had already graduated from Fullerton College but remained committed to Scouting. At the time, Clovis said he wanted to become an aerospace engineer and pilot while continuing his Scouting journey.
Both appear to be on track.
Clovis was recently featured in The Orange Couty Register when he became the youngest student to graduate from the UC Irvine (UCI) School of Humanities, earning a bachelor’s degree in history with a minor in anthropology. He enrolled at UCI at age 13.
This fall, Clovis will begin a bachelor of science program in drone development and autonomous systems at Fullerton College. He also plans to take chemistry and physics courses to prepare for a master’s degree in aerospace engineering.
And during all of this, Scouting has remained part of his journey.
Clovis joined Scouting in first grade and has been a Scout for nine years. His mother, Song Choi, says Clovis has completed his Eagle Scout service project building bale stands for the UC Irvine Archery Club and is now awaiting his Eagle Scout board of review. He hopes to become an Eagle Scout by the end of September.
“Time is flying by so fast,” Song Choi says. “I love his never-giving-up mindset, which has helped him overcome each challenge so far. I’m so proud of him.”
Song Choi says Clovis is also working toward a private pilot’s license. Clovis turns 16 next year and will be eligible for his first solo flight. His goal in aviation is to become a commercial pilot.
History, meanwhile, remains a major interest. Clovis has visited 37 countries and plans to keep traveling, using those experiences to learn about different cultures.
“He has learned so much history while traveling,” Song Choi says. “The feeling of looking at (Egypt’s) pyramids of Giza with your own eyes is so different from seeing them on YouTube.”
