For any new or prospective Cub Scout family, visiting a meeting or joining for the first time can be intimidating. That’s why it is important for packs to do all they can to ensure new families feel welcome, connected and like they belong.
Last month, the National Cub Scout Committee launched the first of a three-part leadership-training video series specifically geared toward creating stronger experiences and connections with new families. The first two episodes of Monthly Momentum Rally are available. Registration is open for the final episode set for 7 p.m. CST on November 11.
Personal contact is crucial
Episode one focuses on the first month of membership, encouraging leaders to make personal contact with new families within 24 to 48 hours of registration. When Scouters provide clear next steps, a new Cub Scout family feels less overwhelmed and uncertain. New Cub Scouts should quickly meet buddies and den leaders, while parents should be introduced to each other. A parents-only social meetup outside of the official pack meeting is a great option.
Episode two focuses on the second month, when a good first impression grows into something more meaningful. Leaders should focus on three things during this period:
- Connect: Keep checking the relationship. Make sure communication, friendships and expectations are working in real life.
- Contribute: Offer small, defined ways for adults to help. Make the task clear and useful.
- Belong: Build a community through repeated positive experiences.
The journey continues
The final episode of Monthly Momentum Rally will focus on the third month of membership. Learn how to focus on deeper participation, build relationships and foster a culture of engagement. Mark your calendars for 7 p.m. CST November 11. Register today.
